Easy Treats to Bake with your Kids (in Under 20 Minutes)

Here’s the expectation of a day in the kitchen with your kids: the sun is streaming through the window, everyone is laughing as they lick butter off a spoon, they’re not touching anything they shouldn’t be, and they don’t get bored. Here’s the reality: what starts out as a day of fun ends up with you covered in milk and flour, finishing up a cake alone because your kids went back to the iPad an hour ago. Baking with your kids can be a delight, but there are two ground rules to keep it that way: 1. It needs to be easy. 2. It needs to be quick.

Here are our favourite things to bake with little ones in under 20 minutes flat, plus you can make these with our new range of baking goodies which are high quality and pretty as a picture for your Instagram story.

2 Ingredient Nutella Cake from Kid Spot

If you’re a parent, you probably have Nutella and eggs in your house, so that means you have enough to make this super easy cake.

Ingredients

  • 4 eggs, large, room temperature
  • 240 g Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180 C and line a 20cm round cake pan with baking paper.
  2. Place eggs into mixing bowl and beat on high to triple the volume for 5-7 minutes.
  3. Microwave Nutella in a medium bowl for 15-20 seconds until soft.
  4. Spoon one third of the egg mixture into the Nutella and fold in. Continue folding egg mixture in thirds until entirely combined.
  5. Spoon mixture into cake pan and bake for 25-30 minutes until a skewer comes out clean. Enjoy!

Easy Peasy Jam Drops from Kid Spot

Everyone loves a biscuit, and if you can slip in a little fruit (yes, even in jam form), then it’s even better. These are tasty and store in airtight containers really well.

Ingredients

  • 6 tbs butter
  • 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla essence
  • 1 3/4 cups self raising flour, sifted
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/2 cup raspberry jam

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180 C. Cover 2 baking sheets with baking paper.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar together until pale.
  3. Add egg and vanilla and beat well.
  4. Add flour and salt and mix well.
  5. Roll teaspoonful sized balls of batter and place on the baking tray 2 grown up fingers apart.
  6. Using the end of a wooden spoon, make a well in the centre of each ball. Fill each indentation with a quarter of a teaspoon of jam (hint: this is a perfect job for kiddies as is doesn’t matter if it gets a little messy).
  7. Bake for 10-15 mins.

Super Simple Fudge from Delicious Magazine

This fudge is incredibly simple but lasts for ages and you can use fun cookie cutters to make any kind of shape you like.

Ingredients

  • 450g icing sugar, plus extra for dusting
  • 100g marshmallows
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 100g unsalted butter
  • A few drops of vanilla extract

Method

  1. Sift the icing sugar into a large bowl and make a well in the centre.
  2. Put the marshmallows in a pan and add the milk, butter and vanilla extract.
  3. Put the pan over a low heat and stir very carefully with a wooden spoon for a few minutes until melted.
  4. Pour the mixture into the middle of the sugar and mix until it is a smooth dough.
  5. Cool for 10 minutes, then put onto a piece of non-stick baking paper. Wrap and chill in the fridge for about 1 hour to firm up.
  6. Sprinkle icing sugar over a work surface and a rolling pin. Cut the fudge into 4 equal pieces, then roll 1 piece at a time with the rolling pin until it is about 5mm thick.
  7. Choose some small Christmas cutters and use to cut out fudge shapes. Re-roll the trimmings to make about 70-80 shapes.
  8. Put on baking sheets lined with baking paper and leave for 30 minutes to firm up slightly. Store in an airtight container with baking paper between each layer to stop them sticking together and keep in a cool place for up to 3 weeks.
