10 Can’t-Believe-I-Didn’t-Know-That Kitchen Hacks
You know when you go to a friend's house and they have some genius trick to clean their dishwasher or store food or get their kids to eat green things? It's like you're suddenly part of a secret group of super women! We love it too, so we've collected all the very best kitchen tips and tricks to make a cheat sheet for your own kitchen. You're welcome!
Clean your dishwasher
To remove mildew from the inside of your dishwasher, mix 1 part chlorine bleach to 10 parts water, or mix 3 litres of water with 1/2 cup of ammonia. Then wipe the inside with the mixture and a cloth or sponge (wearing rubber gloves). Note: never mix bleach and ammonia together, and don't use chlorine bleach if the machine has a stainless steel interior – bleach can corrode it. Afterwards, run the dishwasher through a rinse cycle to remove any excess mixture.
Keep potatoes white
If you have already cut and peeled your spuds but aren't quite ready to cook them, place them in a plastic bowl and cover them with cold water to prevent them from turning brown. That's caused by the release of a starch that makes them oxidize, by the way.
Keep bananas fresh
Wrap the end of your banana bunch with plastic wrap or separate them and wrap each end. The plastic wrap blocks the gases that turn bananas brown from releasing out of the stem.
Use shower caps creatively
Shower caps actually make easy and hassle-free covers for food dishes that you don't want flies sitting on before you serve them. Use your shower cap to cover your dish.
Figure out if eggs are still okay to eat
Place a raw egg in a bowl of cold water. If it sinks to the bottom, it's totally fine to eat. If it floats, it's not good anymore – throw it out.
Keep avocado fresh for days
Store your avocados in airtight containers in your refrigerator, even while there are still whole. Keeps them fresh for up to two weeks.
Separate egg whites and yolks
While we're talking about eggs, separate eggs by cracking it into a bowl and gently squeezing a plastic water bottle (we have loads to choose from in store) over the yolk. When the bottle re-inflates with air, it will suck the yolk up.
Keep your pots from overboiling
Prevent water from overboiling out of a cooking pot by placing a wooden spoon across the top. Turns out wood is not a good material for conducting heat and the hot water strays away from the handle.
Wash your cooking smell hands
Get rid of garlic or onion scented hands by washing them with lemon juice, baking soda, or even stainless steel.
